Today we had students work on graphs to better understand what we covered in the ramp lab. Specifically we reviewed the position vs. time graph and the velocity vs. time graph for the buggy lab. I then asked them some questions for the graph below:
What’s great is that the students were able to figure out that the object was slowing down and moving backwards. When I asked the to plot velocity vs. time, here is what they came up with (2 most common answers)
They were able to combine these two answers into the graph shown into the picture after I explained a little bit to them.
Of course, the question then becomes “How can an object have a positive acceleration but be slowing down?”
This is something we will finish next week, though students did have some ideas today.
