I think I will divide my white board use into two general categories, and I want to summarize basic reasons below

Little whiteboards

  • short answers and responses
  • formative individual assessment on basic ideas
  • scaffolding to get students to more challenging ideas via problem response
  • formative assessment during scaffolding process
  • Useful as a way of doing interactive lecture i.e. teaching through problems
  • instructor can “cherry pick” answers as springboard to quick direct instruction

Big whiteboards

  • long work out problems and responses
  • formative individual assessment on complicated ideas
  • formative assessment to see where students are getting confused with more complicated ideas
  • Useful as a way of doing student-led discussions
  • instructor can “cherry pick” answers as springboard to facilitate further student instruction, and to guide students to correct ideas
